ancient world in contrast

14/08/2013 by arne

the roots of modern greece can be traced back to the mycenaean, minoan and helennic civilisations. since then the country was ruled by the roman, byzantine, and the ottoman empire. it housed a large number of conflicts and cultural as well as religious influences. these influences still shape the impressions you get when wandering around the country. although the county recently had to face a substantial economic crisis, the people did not lose hope nor did they forget their overwhelming […]

last call

07/11/2012 by arne

it’s a very odd feeling when we enter old abandoned factories the first time – mounting tension alternates with deep reverence and a breeze of anxiety. the first question that arises is what kind of industry was run inside the building and which tracks survived the in the course of time. often, flora has already started to reclaim the building, and the true function remains shrouded in mystery. the building was easy to access – doors and windows were left […]

left alone

26/08/2012 by arne

i am drawn to many of the places i have been to in my life – but it is always exiting to get to know new countries. iceland combined breathtaking landscape with abandoned objects that were left alone decades ago or that just arose from forces of nature. comparable to the isolated places i visited during my last year’s trip to the usa (tracking erosion), the sceneries were often entirely shaped by erosion. traces of degradation found on every object […]

faces

a set of portrait shots taken on the street and on trips to different countries. when beeing out with a camera, spending hours taking photos of buildings and other stuff others wouldn’t necessary care about a second, you easily get in touch with some locals. the first question usually is where we came from and why we spent that much time on certain objects – and that’s the point of time where you also get told an interesting story or […]

8,124 squared

29/06/2012 by arne

an island which is located at 66 degrees north latitude – a land that is almost entirely shaped by volcanos, underground geothermal processes and tracks left by glaciers of the last ice age. geologically, iceland is intersected by the mid-atlantic ridge along which many volcanos such as the eyjafjallajökull are located. the ridge separates the eurasian and north american plates constantly due to its spreading activity. every single place we visited and every single day brought us into a completely […]

patterns

22/04/2012 by arne

i often catch myself taking photos of patterns and flowing lines. they are a red line in many of my photos, so it was just a small step to repeating this topic in the nature. the pictures in this album show various patterns shaped either by water, wind, heat, or sometimes just human impact. except the two photos showing snow (which really required some adjustments to highlight shadows), none of the pictures have been reworked or edited with photoshop.

city snippets

01/04/2012 by arne

whenever i walk through the streets of places i go to, i recognize certain patterns or structures i perceive to be remarkable and expressive. often, interaction between light and shadows is the driver for these patterns. these photos were taken in las vegas, vienna, bilbao, munich, görlitz and hamburg. i want to share them as viewers start wondering where these snippets have been shot or what they show.

solid transparency

20/12/2011 by arne

architectural design over the decades – abstract photos that trigger powerful impressions through vertically and horizontally escaping lines and winding surfaces that are driven by a distinct aspiration towards transparency. construction materials dominated by concrete, glass and metal.

neon

17/12/2011 by arne

this is a very colorful selection of all types of light sources to be found in cities – i really like how colors burn into every shape close by and how they appear mirrored and shifted on glossy surfaces.

lost in the city

17/12/2011 by arne

discovering urban areas in various places around the world – following narrow stairways and streets full of corners, spotting construction and destruction, broken lines and overlaid patterns to end up in abandoned places. these pictures where taken on my trip to manchaster and york / uk, munich / germany, bilbao / spain as well as on our field trip through utah, arizona, and nevada. pure and crispy black and white..

tracking erosion

17/12/2011 by arne

impressions of our trip through the southwestern usa with always being on the road tracking eroded earth layers. these patterns of erosion have been our permanent companion wherever we did go. starting in las vegas red rocks to a breathtaking roundtrip across zion national park, bryce canyon, island in the sky, arches national park, antelope canyon, buckskin gulch / paria river and finally ending up in one of the heaviest thunderstorms we have ever been into…
